The World as a Materialized Dream
The World as a Materialized Dream
In Arrernte language, the verb 'to dream' (altjirerama) literally means 'to see God.' What Spencer and Gillen translated as 'Dreamtime' (1899) actually means something closer to 'eternal, uncreated' (Carl Strehlow, 1908).
Songlines โ the entire continent is connected by 'singing tracks,' which are simultaneously navigational maps, legal systems, and cosmology. Aboriginal culture has survived continuously for over 65,000 years โ the longest on Earth โ and dreams are its absolute foundation.
