Dreams in Norse Mythology

Norse tradition did not draw a sharp line between dream, vision, and trance. The boundaries between the Nine Worlds on Yggdrasil were permeable — dreams were a way to travel between them. Odin hung for nine nights on the World Tree in a death-trance to receive the runes.

Nine Worlds, Permeable Boundaries

Nine Worlds, Permeable Boundaries

Odin hung nine nights on Yggdrasil, pierced by his own spear, without food or water, in a vision-trance at the edge of death. In this state, the runes were revealed to him — the connection between dreaming, sacrifice, and the acquisition of knowledge.

Baldr, the most beautiful of the gods, began dreaming of his own death. His mother Frigg made all things swear not to harm him — but forgot mistletoe. Loki exploited this and Baldr died — triggering the chain of events leading to Ragnarök. The only prophetic dream in mythology that triggered the apocalypse.

"He took no bread, drank nothing, just gazed into the depths of darkness, then cried out and took up the runes."

— Rúnatál, Hávamál, Poetic Edda
