The Mandukya Upanishad — Four States
Waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and turiya — Hindu philosophy recognized dreaming as a legitimate state of consciousness with its own reality, millennia before Western psychology.
Philosophy → Consciousness
In the Mandukya Upanishad, there are four states of consciousness: waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and turiya (pure awareness beyond all). Dreaming is a recognized state of consciousness with its own reality. The entire universe is Brahma's dream — when he awakens, the world dissolves.
Brahma — the entire universe is his dream. When he wakes, the world ceases. When he sleeps again, a new world is born. Cosmic dream as the foundation of reality. Vishnu sleeps on the cosmic serpent Shesha on the milk ocean; from his navel grows a lotus, from which Brahma is born. Creation arises from sleep.
Maya (Buddha's mother) dreamed that a white elephant with six tusks entered her side. Sages interpreted it as the birth of a great spiritual leader. The birth of Buddhism began with a dream.
"What if this waking life is merely the dream of a sleeping god?"
