Dreams in Aztec Tradition

The Aztec concept temicxoch ("flower dream") described sacred visionary states. During dreams, the soul (tonalli) could leave the body and travel to Mictlan (the underworld). If it didn't return, the person fell ill. Shamans spoke of 'carrying the dream on their back' โ€” bringing it from darkness to light.

Flower Dreams & Soul Flight

Temicxoch (flower dream) โ€” the Aztec term for sacred trance-vision. Xochipilli, god of beauty, music, and dream-visions, was depicted in ecstasy, covered in sacred plants.

Tonalli could leave the body during sleep. If lost, the person fell ill. Shamans (tlamatiquetl) searched the dream-realm for lost souls. Dreams foretold the fall of the Aztec empire โ€” but Moctezuma imprisoned the dreamers instead of listening.

"The shaman carries the dream on their back โ€” a burden from the underworld that must be brought into the light."
