Dreams in Bible & Judaism

In the Hebrew Bible, dreams are one of God's primary communication channels. "If there is a prophet among you, I make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream" (Numbers 12:6). From Jacob's ladder to Joseph's interpretations in Egypt, dreams shaped the destiny of nations.

Divine Communication Channel

Divine Communication Channel

Jacob — dreamed of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending (Genesis 28). He named the place Bethel ("House of God"). Joseph — a double dream story: as a youth he dreamed of sheaves and stars bowing to him; in Egypt he interpreted Pharaoh's dream of 7 fat and 7 lean cows = 7 years of plenty and 7 of famine. A dream that saved Egypt from starvation.

The Talmud (Berachot 55a-57b) contains extensive discussions: "An uninterpreted dream is like an unread letter" — Rabbi Hisda. "All dreams follow the mouth" — meaning interpretation shapes reality. A remarkably modern idea.
