Dream Journeys to the Bottom of the Sea
Dream Journeys to the Bottom of the Sea
If the community breaks a taboo, Sedna withholds the animals. The angakkuq must descend in a dream to her realm at the bottom of the ocean, comb her tangled hair, and appease her โ so she releases seals and whales for the hunt.
Animals have inua โ spiritual essence. In dreams, the shaman communicates with them as equals. The success of the hunt depends on maintaining harmony with animal spirits โ and dreams are the primary channel.
"The shaman descends in dream to the bottom of the sea, combs Sedna's tangled hair, and asks her to release the animals."
