Dreamtime — Creating the World
In the eternal present of Dreamtime, Ancestors sang and dreamed the world into being. Every feature of the landscape — every hill, river, rock — is a trace of an Ancestor's journey.
Cosmology → Dream as creation
Dreamtime (Tjukurpa) is not 'a time of dreaming' — it is an eternal present in which the Ancestors created the world through song and dream. The landscape is literally a materialized dream — every hill, river and rock is an Ancestor's footprint. The longest continuous cultural tradition on Earth, and dreams are its foundation.
In Arrernte language, the verb 'to dream' (altjirerama) literally means 'to see God.' What Spencer and Gillen translated as 'Dreamtime' (1899) actually means something closer to 'eternal, uncreated' (Carl Strehlow, 1908).
